What is a Host Travel
Agency?
Starting your own travel agency from scratch can be overwhelming. It often requires a significant upfront investment, industry certifications, specialized technology, and years spent building supplier relationships.
That’s why most modern independent travel advisors choose to partner with what’s called a host agency.
A host agency provides the back-end support, tools, and travel credentials you need to operate as a legitimate travel advisor—without having to build it all yourself. There are many types of host agencies, from small boutique operations to large national networks.
Each one offers its own culture, commission structures, training systems, and technology platforms.
By joining a host agency, you gain access to their established supplier relationships, booking platforms, and buying power.
This allows you to offer competitive rates and earn commissions— whether you’re booking trips for yourself or for clients.
You’ll typically pay a set-up fee and either a monthly or annual service fee to use the host’s technology, tools, and credentials.
When you book travel, those reservations are made under the host agency’s credentials (such as theirCLIA or IATA numbers). The travel supplier pays commissions directly to the host agency, which then pays you based on your agreed commission split—often between 50– 80%. Some hosts offer higher commission tiers as your sales volume grows.
